For this Islington townhouse garden, within a Grade II listed conservation area, the starting point was a close reading of the clients’ own references, tastes and way of seeing. Rather than treating those influences as decoration, the design process translated them into the structure and character of the garden itself. Early twentieth-century Art Deco art, for example, helped shape a more dynamic spatial language, giving the garden movement, rhythm and graphic confidence.

That framework is grounded by materials sympathetic to the setting, while the planting is allowed to become more expressive: vibrant, unusual in places and deliberately individual. The result is a garden that belongs to its architectural context, but has been shaped closely enough around its owners that it could not convincingly belong to anyone else.
